Toliver's Secret takes place during The
Civil War. The main character's name is Ellen Toliver. She has a lot of fears,
she lives with her mom and grandpa. Ellen's grandpa is a barber for a living
and her family lives in the shop since the building is 2 floored.
On the second
floor lives the redcoats (The British Army) and on the 1st floor lives Ellen
and her family. Her father is a Schoolmaster and her Brother named Ezra is
fighting in the war. Ellen's grandfather always asks for water and so whenever
Ellen has to go and fetch water at the pump, there is always a mean little girl
who pesters Ellen and other little boys named Dicey.
Keep in mind that Ellen is
small and pale, so Dicey always makes fun of her and tells her to go to another
pump which is 2 blocks away. But one day when Ellen comes home from getting
water she finds her mom and grandpa baking a loaf of bread but putting a
That's when Ellen finds out that her grandpa is a
"spy". A few days later Ellen goes with her brother and mom to New
York to drop off Ezra for the war. When she comes back her grandpa's ankle is
hurt because he slipped on ice!!! Which means that he cannot send the important
message to the General!! Because of that Ellen cuts her hair off and changes
into her brother's old clothes, and heads off to the port to take the boat to
When she get's near the pump she see's Dicey and the
Brinkerhoff boys when........the Binkerhoff boys takes the loaf of bread away.
Once she get's her bread back her next problem is to go on the right boat. Also
she would have to ride with a bunch of redcoats!! on the way to Elizabeth-town
she becomes friends with 2 redcoats, Dow and Higgins, and Higgins told Ellen
something important, that "being afraid is not to be ashamed of. but when
something has to be done, don't wonder and wonder about being afraid. If it's
important to you do the best you can do."
Which changed the way of how
Ellen thought of her fears and this "mission". The boat finally lands
and she finds out that she is in Amboy and not Elizabeth-town! So she walks 2
miles and has 11 miles left to go to Elizabeth -town and when she walked 2
miles she ran into a man on a horse, and he was going home which was 1/2 a mile
from Elizabeth town. from there she took the bread to Mr.Shannon who gave the
message to a courier who gave it to the General. Making this the End of the
story and for Ellen who went back home. I think that this is an awesome book
for kids who are interested in American History.
